Matakatia, Whangaparaoa

Awesome day of fishing, heaps of baby snappers.

I caught one Kahawai and a 1.5m Baby Hammer Head Shark the ironic thing about catching the Hammer Head Shark was that it was the only day I forgot my fishy towel so I didn’t know how I was going to get it off my line but then when I got it up next to my boat it spat the hook so I was so happy and relieved.

I caught the Gurnard using a stray-lining rig on a medium size Kahawai fillet and the ironic thing about catching my personal best Snapper that weighed 5.46kg (12 pounds) and that measured 66cm. The ironic thing about catching my Snapper was that I was using big fillets for the whole day and didn’t catch any big fish then I put on two rectangle pieces of Kahawai and that’s when I hooked this giant Snapper.

Great day of catching bait, there was heaps of Yellow Eyed Mullet and heaps of baby Snappers, caught two giant Jack Mackerel. It was funny hooking the giant Jack Mackerel because the first was fighting me really hard and the second one smoked me because I was using a $15 Warehouse rod.

John’s Boat – Waipu Coast (opposite golf course)

Location: Out from Marsden Point, turn right… opposite the golf course.

6am early start on Johns boat, tried a couple of spots the fish werent really biting but John managed to land beuty 55cm Snapper and I caught my first ever Gurnard.

It was only ever was going to be a short fishing trip because we were leaving to go home that day. John owns one of my favourite fishing boats, a Surtees Game Fisher 6m. He gave me an exciting trip home by tapping it out at 30 knots.
